The FlickrFight Open is the annual edition of the platform — a single, season-long knockout that takes the daily head-to-head format and stretches it across forty-plus categories, four judge rounds, and a public bracket watched by 1.24 million photographers. Where the everyday ring crowns a winner every twelve minutes, the Open crowns one photograph across the whole internet.
Open to anyone with a FlickrFight account. Free to enter. No entry cap, no theme gate, no fee. You submit three frames in any category you shoot; the community votes through three public rounds; the last eight in each category are sent to a rotating panel of working photographers. Winners are published on the front page, earn a verified Open Champion badge that travels with their profile, and are bundled into the weekly digest sent to 2,400 approved art buyers, photo editors, and scout partners.

The Open is underwritten by a rotating roster of gear manufacturers, media outlets, and licensing desks. Thirty-eight brands have put $2.1M in prizes through FlickrFight across the last three editions — here is the wall of the four headline partners for 2025, and the categories their awards will sit inside.

Every Top-8 finisher across all categories receives a Peak Design Everyday Backpack and a Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. The overall Open Champion receives a full kit credit toward the Capture camera clip system.
Exposure · Licensing Longlist
The full Top-8 bracket across Travel, Documentary, and Wildlife is forwarded to the National Geographic Image Collection licensing desk as a longlist for editorial review. Selection is at the desk's discretion; participation does not guarantee a contract.

Open finalists in News, Sports, and Street are bundled into a monthly digest sent to the Shutterstock Editorial curation team. Selected images are invited to the standard editorial submission review process.

Read this once. The mechanics below are identical to the 2023 and 2024 editions and have been stress-tested across 168,000 combined entrants.
Entries open October 28, 2025 and close November 14, 2025 at 23:59 UTC. Each registered member may submit up to three frames per category, across as many categories as they shoot. Images must be uploaded as JPEGs or PNGs at a minimum of 2,000 pixels on the long edge. No AI-generated or fully synthetic frames. The same image may not be entered in two categories.
Forty-plus categories across six families — Street, Portrait, Landscape, Wildlife, Documentary, and Smartphone — plus specialty brackets including Drone, Analog Film, Night, Architecture, Food, and Sports. A category must clear a 64-entrant minimum to run; undersubscribed categories are merged into the closest bracket with the entrant's consent.
Three public rounds run from November 18 through December 8. Matchups are seeded by FrameRating ELO at the close of entries. Verified members receive five weighted votes per round; votes are checked against the same anti-manipulation stack used in daily battles — device fingerprinting, cooldown curves, and a per-category Integrity Index.
The Top-8 in each category advances to a closed judge round scored by a rotating panel of 96 named working photographers. Judges score on composition, originality, technical execution, and category fit, then rank the bracket independently. The aggregated judge verdict is weighted 60/40 against the community vote in the final.
Category winners are announced December 19, 2025. The single Open Champion across all categories is selected from the category winners by a final super-judge panel and announced December 22. Every finalist is published on the front page, receives an Open Champion verified badge, and is added to the next Scout Channel digest sent to 2,400+ art buyers and photo editors.
Figures are verified at the close of the 2024 edition. The 2025 Open targets a 100,000-entrant threshold but no entrant count is guaranteed.

The 2025 judge panel will be announced in full on October 21. Past judges include Pulitzer finalist Maya Sugarman, Reuters staff photographer Hannah Reyes, and 90 other working photographers across editorial, commercial, and fine-art practice.
